Another year of amazing surfing on the iconic Surf Coast...

Recently the Surf Coast Hotel at Wyndham Resort Torquay, was proud to host world class surfers from the 2017 Rip Curl Pro to their annual launch event.  Each year Torquay lights up as thousands of tourists and locals descend on Bells Beach to watch the world’s best surfers compete for the iconic, and prestigious, Bell trophy.

This year, internationally recognized surf wear company Rip Curl joined forces with our local council, the Surf Coast Shire and Surfing Victoria to welcome some of the World Surfing League’s elite to the Surf Coast Hotel’s Conference and Events Centre.  The launch event was hosted in our exclusive Ballroom overlooking Torquay’s Zeally Bay and Fisherman’s beach, giving fans, guests and tourists the opportunity to meet and mingle with surfing royalty with our world famous beaches as a back drop.  Thanks to Corona (a sponsor of the Pro), local wineries such as Bellbrae Estate and our head chef, the catering was also a highlight of the night.

Beginning with an Aboriginal acknowledgment of country in the form of didgeridoo, the night progressed well with quite a few formalities to kick off the WSL Bells leg - Max Wells was inducted into the Surfing Victoria hall of fame and young groms with World Surf League tour rankings received prizes from Great Ocean Chocolaterie and Rip Curl as well as interviews and speeches given to the huge crowd.

It was a great to start the 56 year old competition that has dramatically grown the tourism industry on the Surf Coast; the gateway to the Great Ocean Road.

A special thanks to Liam Robertson (Surfing Vic), Jodie Keating/Gilly Hughes (Surf Coast Shire) and Mark Flanagan (Rip Curl) for their assistance in organising the event.
